The Unbound Gazette is a blog/journal using art to reflect on society. Not that we reject art for art's sake, however this blog explicitly targets those works of art embedded/targeting/challenging 'society'.
It covers a wide variety of topics and opinions with art as our vehicle to reflect and bring to the surface those opinions, which are less articulated in more classic media.
On the blog...
We're not (very much not) a blog chasing all that is new. We're not in the business of being the first. Our preference is clearly relevancy over momentary. So don't expect to get the newest trends, the latest gossip or the hottest art. Really, there are blogs who do that far better than we would be able to.
Nor do we (necessarily) have a daily post, a weekly special issue or a yearly overview. We simply post whenever we find something interesting. Yes, that's right, we're slow-bloggers and we must confess, we kinda like it that way.
Do know that you can always suggest stuff. Simply go to the contact form and get us posted on an interesting artist, works or whatever. And yes, that includes personal work, and yes it also includes 'not-very-recent' works of art.
Finally, we like to keep it simple: simple design, no flashy website: let art do the talking...
On the Bloggers...
This is an initiative of Dirk Derom.
Yet, for now we decided not to display the names of the contributors. It should not be hard for a IT wiz to find that out, nevertheless this blog/journal was initiated as a volunteer-based blog/journal. We might change this policy in the future, but for now it suits us just fine. And more importantly, it puts the emphasis on the works of art and not on the bloggers, cause we're nothing but humble servants. At your service!
Art you say?
Yes, well and euhm no. Art in the broadest sense. Don't expect us to give a definition of art, but it covers every creative act you can imagine. So, wherever you see someone 'doing something weird' , we probably will consider that arty. Or in other words:
- a visual artist 'representing' Western attitude towards religion
- an audio artist recording the sound of the streets with his hand made street gramophone
- a poet screaming his poem to the daily stream of working people
- a photographer taking a picture of a man smoking his pipe in front of the clinic
- a mathematician using a graph in the shape of an oil drill to show the pollution of the sea
- a philosopher reflecting (oh irony) on the physical act of boxing
Special Issues
Ok, sometimes we feel like we should compile a few works of art cause we think they fit quite well together. Bundled around a theme (e.g. war, civil rights, migration, beauty...) one of our editors compiles a Special Issue which you can download in a nice little pdf. It depends on the editor whether this is on invitation only or as an open invitation to anyone interested.
As usual, feel free to suggest any topic/artist or follow the announcements on this website to see when there's a 'call for contributors'.
But aren't you guys biased?
Simple answer: yes, cause we're humans.
A bit longer (though we don't feel like explaining): yes, we are most likely biased. We do have people with various backgrounds, and various interests. Meaning: we all bring in our own personal (little) opinion and such is reflected in the blog and blog-posts. Why not, and this is why we are not journalists but bloggers. Even those special issues are probably biased.
This does not mean that we dwell in a particular theory, political opinion or whatever. It's simply recognizing that there's no other way. This said, we still try to set our opinions aside and post as varied as possible.
